Nicotine 101: The Truth About What It Is And What It Does
What is nicotine, and is it as scary as we are led to believe? Will it damage your health? These are just some of the questions that may be raised when someone mentions the word nicotine. Here is a closer look at what you need to know about this substance.
Nicotine is a chemical compound that is present in the tobacco plant. You will find nicotine in tobacco cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco, certain vaping liquids and some e-cigarettes. Nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream when smoked. It is an addictive substance.
Nicotine is only a mild stimulant that can actually enhance the performance of some activities. It has been found to improve memory and concentration and also sharpen vigilance and rapid visual cue processing. The nicotine receptors have been found to help regulate other receptor systems. An agitated smoker can be calmed and a sleep-deprived person can become more alert thanks to nicotine.
However, it is important to keep in mind that it is addictive. If you are not currently a smoker, taking up the habit of smoking anything containing nicotine is not recommended.
What does nicotine do?
Nicotine is interesting in the sense that it is both a sedative, which can make you feel calm, and a stimulant, which can make you feel vigilant and alert. When our bodies are exposed to nicotine, we experience a surge. This surge, or hit, happens when nicotine stimulates our adrenal glands. This releases adrenaline, and you get that pleasurable feeling that is caused by dopamine release. Dopamine makes you feel content. It is also a sedative and can make you feel chilled-out and relaxed.
Is nicotine harmful?
Many people believe that nicotine is the main culprit behind the damage caused by smoking. And while it is addictive, it is not the agent that causes serious illness or death. It is actually tobacco that causes the most harm. When tobacco is burned in a traditional paper-based cigarette, it releases around 6,000 chemicals. Tar is the one that brings about so many of the health problems associated with smoking traditional cigarettes.
So, to put it simply nicotine, nicotine is an addictive substance. It does not cause cancer. As Michael Russell, the developer of nicotine gum, said, “People smoke for nicotine but they die from the tar.”
Is there nicotine in e-cigarettes?
Most e-cigarettes and vapes contain nicotine. The levels of nicotine in vape juice and vape liquids, such as this Tabac Relex, are pretty low, and they don’t contain tobacco, which releases cancer-causing chemicals called carcinogens. The risk involved in vaping is very small compared to that of smoking cigarettes.
E-cigarettes do not contain the same ingredients as traditional cigarettes. They contain fewer numbers and lower levels of toxic chemicals than tobacco cigarettes. Most of the ingredients in an e-cigarette or vape pen can be found in your kitchen cabinet.
E-cigarette vapor appears to be less addictive than cigarette smoke. Research has shown that vapers who were once smokers don’t tend to suffer from irritability when they can’t vape compared to when they couldn’t smoke. They are also more likely to pick up their e-cigarette much later in the day than when they were smokers. Moreover, vapers do not wake up during the night despite being prone to doing so as smokers.
It is also true that the amount of nicotine in an e-cigarette is much lower per puff. Vaping produces lower blood nicotine. The lower amount of nicotine and the longer it takes to reach its peak level has a direct link to how addictive it’s going to be.
Many experts now believe that encouraging current tobacco smokers to choose vaping instead will bring real, long-term health benefits to them.
Why are tobacco cigarettes considered more harmful than e-cigarettes?
It wasn’t until 1988 that smoking was considered addictive. Until then, it had been seen as habitual. Today, though, it is widely recognized that smoking cigarettes causes cancer, heart and lung disease and even death.
The main difference between smoking tobacco, which is now seen as addictive, and inhaling vape, which is seen as a habit, is the delivery method. Smoking delivers nicotine by burning tobacco. This process causes thousands of chemicals to be released. It is at this point that smoking becomes dangerous. Vaping delivers only nicotine by heating liquid in a way that is much less harmful.
